Just Keep on Runnin’By Ence on December 9th, 2010
Most levels in Sonic Colors are actually a combination of 3D and 2D segments. The 3D parts are blindingly fast sections with you running from robot death machines, grinding on rails, spinning through asteroid fields, and doing loops through giant donuts (at least when you’re in the Cake Town stage). The 2D parts are where it slows down a bit for some platforming. This is where it feels like a traditional Sonic game. Except the powerups! I think this game is fairly comparable to something like Mario Galaxy in this regard. Every now and then you’ll find a bee mushroom and you’ll turn into a bumblebee and float around for a while. Only in Sonic Colors it’s a kind of floating ghost that’s SUPER FAST. All of the powerups are pretty fast, actually. I think they really add to the experience while not overstaying their welcome and they make the 2D sections a lot of fun. Okay, so now let’s talk about the bad stuff. So far I’ve made the game sound absolutely perfect. Which, in a way, it is. Especially when compared to recent Sonics. However, there are some flaws. It’s probably not fair to compare it to Mario Galaxy again, but when you have so much platforming in your game, the controls need to be spot on. In Mario Galaxy, you are in perfect control of your character. I always found myself landing some really crazy jumps and if I didn’t, if I missed and died, it was because I wasn’t good enough, not because of poor controls. The controls in Sonic Colors aren’t by any means terrible, but I feel like they could be a bit more precise. Sonic’s new voice actor is okay. He still sounds like Sonic, but I kind of like the old one more. Of course, his dialogue isn’t exactly of the highest calibur. It mostly consists of cheesy, Saturday morning cartoon one-liners and such. The cinematics really do make it feel like you’re watching a kid’s cartoon. That’s not the worst thing ever, but it can be a little annoying at times. I do like most of Eggman’s dialogue though. Especially his speeches over the loudspeakers while you’re running though his amusement park. So that’s what I think about Sonic Colors! It’s not the best game ever but it’s still a lot of fun and exactly what a Sonic game should be. |
