REVIEW: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil SurvivorBy Locke on July 23rd, 2009
This game is a very unique hybrid. The story itself is told through dialogues whenever you explore any of the districts. Well, you don’t really explore them, you just move there, almost like the system used in any of the DS Yugioh games. You essentially become a Demon Tamer, buying new demons for hire, teaching them new skills by fusing them, and teaching them new skills over time. The actual combat plays like a mixture of Final Fantasy Tactics as well as traditional JRPG turnbased fighting. Each demon has his or her own strengths, weaknesses, and movesets. Some demons are unique, and can become very powerful. It plays well, and its very unique in its approach. I’ve found myself dispatching demons in little ten minutes sessions at times while at others I’ve crawled through more than an hour’s worth of gameplay, 30 minutes of that being an epic boss fight. A warning to those weak at heart. This game is somewhat difficult. I assure you, don’t get discouraged if you get savagely dismantled by a certain boss encounter. You may have to change your party up, learn some new skills, or take another approach to the fight. It’s especially rewarding to get past some of the later boss fights. There was one mission where it took about 45 minutes to complete, mostly because of the boss’s overpowered attacks, my main character being the only character that can deal damage, and the surrounding monsters’ ability to cast the Shin Megami Tensei equivalent of Curaga on him. *shudder* Anyhoo, if you’ve been waiting for a game that has complexity, a grand story, and replay value, get this game. Like… now. Bottom Line Pros: Great Story, Sound, and Gameplay. I’m giving this game a 5/5. I really can’t complain about this game at all; save for it’s hard parts, it’s flawless. |
