Handhelds of the FutureBy Locke on March 24th, 2010
Nintendo just announced their Nintendo 3DS, the successor to the line of DS handhelds. The draw to this product is that it will be capable of producing 3D graphics without the use of special glasses, a feat that has previously been possible with the iPhone’s camera system. Hopefully we will see some impressive new games coming out from this technology. Nintendo has always taken a careful approach concerning the features of their products. The DS, using touch screen technology was considered gimmicky at first, but given a chance with some good games, proved to be worthy of development. The Wiimote had the same skepticism, and Sony now has realized their version of a motion controller. While fans are urging Nintendo to release support for High Definition in their games, either in the current console or their next, I can only be pleased with the news of this handheld. I’ve owned a DS and a PSP at the same time, and I got a lot more gametime out of my DS. Sadly the only game that gripped me on the PSP was Metal Gear: Portable Ops, but I know times have changed since then. I can’t wait for Sony’s response; if they release a handheld with the power of a Playstation 2, sign me up. |
