The Dark DescentBy Locke on June 8th, 2012
A really good friend of mine introduced me to the Penumbra series by gifting me the trilogy the year before last. I loved some aspects of the game, mostly the atmosphere, the feeling of helplessness, and the excellence of the story. I wasn’t as pleased with some of the puzzle solutions. Other games had a way of nudging you in the right direction, whereas some of the solutions in Penumbra you just had to stumble upon. Amnesia: Dark Descent fixes all that. Many of the puzzles are pretty straight-forward; all of the ways you can manipulate objects in the world are taught to you in the first half hour or so, so once you really get into the swing of things, you just have to think it over… while not going insane or being eaten by the beasties that lurk in the castle. There are some truly terrifying moments in Amnesia, especially some of the atmospheric touches. Being in basement areas working on a puzzle is sometimes interrupted by what sounds like the wooden floor above you creaking under the weight of some unknown creature. I’m still a ways from finishing the game, but I’ll be sure to post my thoughts after I beat it. -Locke |
Please let me know how you like it. I just got it in the Humble Bundle and have refused to play it for the most part. I’m am almost 100% sure it is an excellent game, but horror games are not for me.
