Halo Reach: MP Beta First ImpressionsBy Locke on May 4th, 2010
There is only one sentence I can use to fully describe how I feel about this game so far. “Halo Reach has single-handedly fixed everything I hated about the Multiplayer in Halo 3.” The loadout system has changed the battlefield so that nobody has a right to complain about not being able to escape. My personal favorite loadout, Scout, allows you to sprint faster for a short amount of time, as well as allow you to long jump to distances impossible for other Spartans. This solved the whole issue I had with melee attacks and lunging. Most people said it was imbalanced with lunge but I felt it was useless without it. Sprint allows you to close the distance between you and an unwary opponent. This becomes amazing in frantic games of CTF or Stockpile. The new gametypes are fun, especially Headhunter. You try to collect flaming skulls around the map and take them to a drop point, but your enemies will try to kill you in the process. If one of you dies, the loser drops all the skulls they are currently carrying. This makes for a crazy battle royale. There are some things that are very broken, like the Guard loadout. In CTF, you can now stand next to your flag after it is dropped by the enemy to send it back after it’s meter depletes. The Guard equip allows you to create a small force field around your body while in use, making you immobile but invulnerable. Do this next to the flag, and you are invulnerable while you make the meter deplete. It of course can’t do this in one Guard cycle, but get two people who can cycle Guard, and we have a crazy defense combo. Another thing that is broken is a certain covenant rifle that shoots multiple heat-seeking plasma grenades. I don’t need to tell you how scary facing that is, or how much fun it is to use it. |
